Flamenco is an art with origins in Spain or, to be more exact, in Andalucía. It is usually considered to be a music of gypsies of Spain, which is partly true, but the music is certainly greatly influenced by the traditional songs and dances of Andalucía and the various cultures and periods of time that Spain has gone through and it is a unique genre of the Southern Spain.

There are two main ideas about the origins of the name of this art. The word "flamenco" is often translated from Spanish as "the burning one" which makes sense if we think of the passionate style of the music. But the name of this genre can also be derived from "falag mengu", which can be roughly translated from Arabic as "the peasants who ran away" and that would explain the origins of the art and the influence of other cultures in this music.

Flamenco was first mentioned in the second half of the 18th century in a work of Cadalso. It was also the time when the first flamenco schools were founded in Seville. The early flamenco used to emphasize a pure vocal and they only used to accompany it with clapping of hands in the rhythm of singing. An important thing in flamenco is the so called duende. It is an alternative to the norms and artistic style, usually seen as a short moment of communication, when a deeper truth is discovered. There are three parts in the flamenco music – the song, the dance and the guitar. The classic flamenco consists of about 60 songs and dances and there are two main styles of flamenco – the regional and the melodical.

Later on flamenco gained its popularity. The second half of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century is considered to be its golden age. It was a time when musicians started to express deeper feelings through the music and also started to use guitars. After the golden age of flamenco it has become popular in other parts of the world and it got influenced by the music of South America.

Nowadays it is affected by other genres of music, like salsa and jazz. The artists now are trying to emphasize their temperament over the artistic skills that used to be the most important. Though today flamenco has gained a worldwide fame, it is always considered to be intimately linked with the Spanish and, more importantly, Andalucía culture throughout the world.
